One of Asia's most vibrant cities, combining ultra modern skyscrapers with bazaars and night markets, a visit to Kuala Lumpur is one of life's most memorable experiences. The skyline of KL is dominated by the Petronas Twin Towers, the world's tallest building, yet at street level Malaysia's fascinating history is evident with the splendour of Moorish buildings on Merdeka Square mixed with areas of old colonial buildings and a vibrant Chinatown plus 'Little India' district. There is a lively nightlife, combining fashionable alfresco cafes with trendy bars and restaurants in the Bangsar quarter, and with its diversity of cultures Malaysia is a gourmet's delight with excellent Chinese, Indian and of course Malay cuisine. No trip to KL would be complete without taking advantage of the shopping bargains to be found, not just in the bazaars, but also in the regular 'sales' in the modern air-conditioned shopping malls.

The 'historical city of Malaysia', colonised by the Portuguese, then the Dutch East India Company and finally by the British. The city today has many reminders of the ancient trading past in its historic buildings. Now a sleepy backwater, Malacca was once a major trading centre at the heart of the global spice trade evidenced by the fact that the British exchanged the tiny island of Run, near Malacca, with the Dutch for Manhattan.

Penang is one of Malaysia's most popular resorts, and although the island is relatively small it has plenty to offer the visitor. The idyllic Batu Ferringhi beach has it all; sun, sea and fun, and is where most resort hotels are located, plus it has easy access to the grand old colonial capital of Georgetown. British links with the island are strong, the first British trading post in Malaysia was established here in 1786, and English is widely spoken. However, the island's key cultural influence is Chinese and this gives Penang a distinctly Oriental flavour.

The colonial hill stations and tea plantations high in the hills on the Malaysian peninsula offer a temperate contrast to tropical beaches. British surveyor William Cameron founded the colonial settlements in 1885; the Cameron Highlands is now a centre for the production of vegetables and flowers. At the turn of the 19th century the British Colonials designed the hill stations to resemble English villages with country inns, churches and bungalows, many of which still are still to be seen today.
